A few days ago I
reviewed the classic real time strategy game Transport Tycoon Deluxe or TTD. TTD is considered by many to be abandonware since no organisation or individual claims ownership. Because of this, many versions of the game are available for free download online. However, none of these versions include any new features and so the zealous community of TTD fans have made an open source enhancement of Transport Tycoon called openttd. This version still requires the data files from the original TTD versions such as the ones I highlighted in my
previous post but it also adds a number of new features.
Zooming in an out has become much easier in openttd using the
mouse scroll wheel. You can also use the scroll wheel to scroll
windows. Another useful feature is a fast forward button in the toolbar
that speeds up gameplay!
Several gameplay enhancements have also
been made. Building railway tracks is a whole lot easier now because
you can build them on sloped land as well. In the bus, train , ship and
airplane windows you can sort vehicles according to different criteria
including profitability, reliability and age. The game also informs you
when your vehicles don't make a profit for a year so you can weed out
the poor performers.
One of the most interesting features is the
ability to build extra large railway stations with upto 7 platforms.
You can also add stations to existing ones to increase their size. And
if your wondering why you would need such large stations, its because
you can now select to play super large maps! All in all openttd is a
fantastic TTD enhancement.
